Zinc is one of the trace minerals that is required for a number of bodily functions and is involved in metabolism. It is normally present in red blood cells in the form zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) but this level may increase in people with iron deficiency anaemia and prolonged exposure to lead. This lab test measures the amount of of zinc in the red blood cells blood in order to establish whether there is a zinc deficiency. This lab test is preferred over a standard blood zinc level, since a zinc deficiency will reflect sooner in the zinc red blood cell test.

This lab test is performed in following conditions such as:

• Unexplained weight loss
• Wounds that won’t heal
• Lack of alertness
• Decreased sense of smell and taste
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Open sores on the skin
