Serum uric acid measurements are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and in patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.

DNA, the primary genetic material in the human body, is made of nitrogen containing compounds called purines. These compounds are broken down by a process in the body to produce uric acid. Most uric acid is eliminated from the body via the kidneys. Excessive uric acid in the body can lead to an inflammatory condition of the joints which is called gout. This lab test is a simple blood measurement of uric acid which can help in the diagnosis and treatment of gout, renal disorders and other conditions where uric acid levels are increased.

This uric acid test is performed in following conditions such as:

• Severe pain in your joints
• Joint stiffness
• Difficulty moving affected joints
• Redness and swelling of the joint
• Abnormal joint shape
