Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection that affects the nervous system. It is caused by a bacteria which lives in environment. One is at risk of getting tetanus if they sustain a deep or very dirty wound. It is rare to see tetanus illness because of the tetanus vaccine, however, the vaccine needs to be given every ten years since the antibody levels eventually diminish. In order to establish whether someone is immune to the bacteria which causes tetanus, a tetanus titer test can be performed. This test measures the amount of tetanus IgG in the blood. From this, immunity and need for booster vaccination can be determined.
