Strontium is a heavy trace metal that occurs naturally in the environment in rocks, soil and coal. It is typical to detect small trace amounts in the blood, but the element serves no biological purpose in the body. People who work with ceramics, glass, medicine and paint are susceptible to getting increased levels of strontium in the body. This test measures the amount of strontium in the urine, as this is an easier test to perform, and it helps to detect strontium poisoning from prolonged exposure.
