Selenium, Serum or Plasma

Selenium is a naturally occurring element which is considered a mineral. Small amount of selenium in the body contribute to normal cellular formation, but in high amounts it can be detrimental, causing neurological conditions. People who work with ceramics, glass, livestock, pesticides and paint are susceptible to getting increased levels of selenium in the body. This test measures the amount of selenium in the blood plasma in order to diagnose toxicity. Deficiency in selenium is rare since it is well supplemented in the diet, therefore, this test is reserved for those exhibiting signs and symptoms of selenium toxicity.
