Potassium
$49
Potassium measurements are useful in monitoring electrolyte balance in the diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions characterized by low or high blood potassium levels.
Potassium is one of the main electrolytes in the body that is important to maintain healthy cell functions. Potassium helps to transport nutrients into cells and waste products out of cells. It is needed for healthy muscle and nerve communication and function. Potassium, along with the other electrolytes, help to regulate the amount of fluids in the body. A potassium blood test is part of a routine medical examination, but can be useful in aiding in the diagnosis of kidney disease, adrenal cortical insufficiency and problems with the heartbeat.
Potassium is elevated in adrenal cortical insufficiency, acute renal failure and in some cases of diabetic acidosis. Potassium is decreased in diuretic administration and renal tubular acidosis.
This test is performed in following conditions such as:
• Routine medical examination
• Kidney disease
• Muscle weakness
• Irregular heartbeat
• Medications like diuretics or heart medications
• High blood pressure
• Patients receiving dialysis
