This test measures the levels of Methylmalonic acid (MMA) in the blood. It is a very useful, sensitive and early test to measure for vitamin B12 deficiency.
Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is a substance which is necessary for human metabolism and energy production. It is typically produced in very small amounts in the body. Its main role is to be converted to succinyl Coenzyme A by vitamin B12. When there is not enough vitamin B12, MMA levels in the blood and urine rise. Therefore, this test, which measures the levels of MMA in the urine, is a very useful, sensitive and early test to measure for vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to other health problems, such as anemia, neuropathy and behavioural changes.
