This test measures the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is a type of amino acid that is present throughout the body in all cells in small amounts.

Homocysteine is a type of amino acid that is present throughout the body in all cells in small amounts. Homocysteine is very quickly converted to other products which are more beneficial to cells. In order for homocysteine to be properly metabolized, there has to be normal levels of vitamin B6, B12 and folate. Therefore, an increased levels of homocysteine is an indication of the deficiency of these vitamins. Additionally, high levels on homocysteine has been associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke and atherosclerosis. This test measures the amount of homocysteine in the blood.

This test is performed in following conditions such as:

• Evidence of vitamin B6, B12 or folate deficiency, such as anaemia and peripheral neuropathy
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Fatigue, weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Paleness
• Rapid heart rate
• Shortness of breath
• Sore tongue and mouth

Requirements

For the Homocysteine testing, fasting for 9 - 12 hours is preferred to determine baseline values or to monitor treatment.
