HLA proteins helps the body identify “self” from “nonself” and makes up an important part of the immune system. This blood test determines whether there is HLA-B27 present on the white blood cells. People who are positive for his protein have an increased likelihood of developing autoimmune disorders like ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease and can aid in their diagnosis.
