This test is used to determine anemia by calculating indices. Anemia is caused by the shortage of iron in the body. Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein contained in red blood cells that is responsible for delivery of oxygen to the tissues. It is based on whole blood and therefore dependent on plasma volume.

Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein molecule found in red blood cells to which oxygen molecules bind to in order to be transported around the body. If the structure of the hemoglobin molecule is abnormal, oxygen is unable to bind and there is a shortage of oxygen delivery to the tissues. Hemoglobin also helps to transport the waste product carbon dioxide to the lungs so that it can be exhaled. A hemoglobin test is a direct measurement of the number of red blood cells floating around in the body. This test, along with a hematocrit, is often used in the diagnosis of anemia, polycythemia and bleeding disorders.

This test is performed in following conditions such as:

• Weakness or fatigue
• Lack of energy
