The Fecal Fat Stool Test is used to assess the amount of fat (lipids) in a person’s stool sample. This test can help determine if a person’s body is not properly absorbing dietary fat. Excess fat in the stool can be indicative of a digestive disorder or malabsorption. Malabsorption can be caused by a number of conditions such as infections in the intestines, pancreatic cancer, celiac disease, Crohn’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, blockage of the bile duct and gallbladder cancer.

This test is usually ordered when a person has symptoms such as chronic diarrhea or loose, fatty stools. A Fecal Fat Test may be ordered with other stool tests such as an Ova and Parasite or Occult Blood Test. Follow up blood tests such as a CBC, CMP, or Celiac Disease Test may be necessary to help a person’s doctor make a diagnosis.

Turnaround time for this test is typically 3-8 business days.
