Estrogens are a group of steroid hormones that are converted from androgens and are responsible for the development of the secondary sexual characteristics and the functioning of the reproductive organs. Estrogens can be used to diagnose a host of disorders in women depending on the phase of life they are in. There are 3 different types of estrogens that can be measured. This is a more sensitive test to measure estradiol in the blood. This more sensitive blood test is primarily for people who are expected to have low levels of estradiol such as men, postmenopausal women and prepubescent children.
This test is performed in following conditions such as:
• Girls experiencing signs of early or late puberty
• Women experiencing infertility issues
• Women on hormone replacement therapy in menopause
• To assess ovarian function
• In women with irregular menstrual periods
• Symptoms of menopause
Requirements
The Estradiol, Sensitive test is recommended for people taking the medication Fulvestrant (Faslodex) as an alternative to a standard Estradiol blood test. This medication may cause falsely elevated results on a standard Estradiol test.
