Quest Diagnostics Test Code: 36434

This test measures levels of Cadmium in the urine. Cadmium is a toxic element which can cause health problems for people exposed to it. The most common source of Cadmium exposure is in industrial settings. Cadmium is used in a number of metals and jobs involving heating, welding, grinding and other types of metalwork have a high risk of exposure. While Cadmium is found naturally in the environment, it is not common to experience overexposure to food, water or air sources except in cases where a heavy amount of pollution is present. The buildup of Cadmium in the body from environmental exposure may not show any short-term symptoms. Smokers have a higher risk of cadmium toxicity due to its presence in cigarettes and other tobacco products. Symptoms of acute Cadmium toxicity typically include fatigue, coughing, chest pain and burning in the throat. Longterm health complication can include kidney damage, cancer, infertility and weak bones.

This test is typically ordered to monitor cadmium levels due to long-term exposure. Low to moderate chronic exposure may take up to a year to show increased urine levels. A Blood Cadmium test is considered more accurate for measuring acute exposure. Those looking for more comprehensive heavy metal testing may wish to order the Heavy Metal Profile II which includes testing for Cadmium as well as Arsenic, Lead and Mercury.

Turnaround for this test is typically 5-8 business days.

Requirements

Sampling time is not critical for industrial exposure monitoring. After a couple of weeks of exposure, specimens can be collected at any time. This test is performed on a 24-hour urine sample. For 24 hour testing, customers will need to obtain a specimen container from the lab along with instructions for sample collection.
