The Aldosterone/Renin Ratio Test is used to aid in diagnosing conditions related to irregular blood pressure or hypertension. Results for this test include measurements for aldosterone, renin activity, and aldosterone/renin ratio. Aldosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands which helps to regulate the levels of sodium and potassium in the blood as well as controlling blood pressure and volume. Renin is an enzyme produced by the kidneys which stimulates the production of Aldosterone. Together, Aldosterone and Renin help maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

An aldosterone/renin blood test is often ordered when a person has high blood pressure, especially if they also have abnormal potassium levels or are not responding to blood pressure medication. This testing may also be ordered when someone develops hypertension at an early age. High blood pressure caused by irregular aldosterone production is typically treatable if it is detected early.

Aldosterone testing can also aid in diagnosing conditions which affect the adrenal and pituitary glands such as Addison Disease. In these cases, it is often ordered with other tests such as Cortisol and ACTH.
